Doesn’t everyone love this video? Or, at least, you’ve seen it. Chances are, if you’re reading this, it is redicuolously likely that you’ve witnessed the Youtube sensation of PSY and his music video for his song Gangnam Style. That’s because this is the number 1 most viewed clip on Youtube of ALL time with over 280 million views. There are countless spoofs off of the original and my favorite one is about the school mascot.
PSY is a Korean musician and Gangnam style has caught the attention of many celebrities like Tom Cruise and has even been mentioned in The Wallstreet Journal. Part of it’s appeal is the new dance that you can easily learn from watching the video. Next thing you, you’re somewhere in public and you yell out, “Hey sexy lady!” The best part is that not only does no one think you’re odd but other strangers will start singing it. Besides that line, it’s all Korean but it seems to transcend language. I’ve heard it on the radio and at several different bars I went to.
I don’t know about you, but I have no idea what Gangnam is so I looked it up and found a quote from PSY:
“Gangnam is a territory in Seoul, Korea. I describe it as noble at the daytime and going crazy at the night time. I compare ladies to the territory. So — noble at the daytime, going crazy at the night time — and the lyric says I am the right guy for the lady who is like that.”—PSY, All Things Considered interview on September 15, 2012
Like all trends, this too shall pass but I’m going to enjoy it until it gets overplayed.
